My First Real Job

I showed up on day one with a new backpack and absolutely no idea what I was doing.

Everyone around me typed like they were defusing a bomb. I opened the codebase and stared at it the way you stare at a menu in a language you don't speak.

The first week

• I broke the build twice before lunch on Wednesday.
• I asked a question so basic that someone made a wiki page for it afterward.
• I learned that "it works on my machine" is not a defense in court.

What actually helped

Nobody remembers the person who never made mistakes. They remember the person who owned them fast, fixed them faster, and left a note so the next scared newcomer wouldn't fall in the same hole.

Confidence isn't knowing everything. It's being okay with not knowing yet.

By month three I stopped feeling like an impostor and started feeling like someone who just hadn't learned that part yet. Turns out that's the whole job.
